Hyundai Go Green Hackathon Showcases Best of Youth-Led Innovative Solutions on Community Heat Resilience & Smart Mobility
Summary By: eMotoX
The fifth edition of the Hyundai Go Green Hackathon brought together 91 students from nine local and international schools to develop innovative solutions addressing climate adaptation challenges. Hosted by Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) and Hyundai CRADLE Singapore, in partnership with Temasek Foundation and supported by the National University of Singapore (NUS), the event was held at Temasek Shophouse. Themed “Go Green: Climate Adaptation,” the hackathon aligned with Singapore’s Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment’s (MSE) Go Green SG 2026 initiative and the Year of Climate Adaptation, focusing on practical responses to climate risks.
Participants, aged 14 to 23, were tasked with two key challenges: redesigning multi-purpose community spaces to serve as heat adaptation measures, and creating smart car-based solutions to transform vehicles into mobile safe spaces during climate hazards such as extreme heat, flooding, and poor air quality. Over two months, teams collaborated with mentors from HMGICS and NUS to develop forward-thinking, actionable ideas that could enhance community resilience and inform future urban and mobility strategies. The hackathon sought to raise climate awareness among youths and nurture talents capable of driving sustainable innovation beyond Singapore.
Leaders involved in the initiative emphasised the importance of youth engagement in tackling climate change. Dr Park Hyun Sung, CEO of HMGICS, highlighted the centre’s commitment to empowering future-ready youths through education and innovation, while Ms Woon Saet Nyoon, Deputy CEO of Temasek Foundation, underscored the critical role of young people in shaping adaptive solutions for the future. The event also reinforced a broader partnership between HMGICS and Temasek Foundation, formalised in 2025 to strengthen youth development in sustainability and innovation.
The hackathon concluded with seven winning teams recognised for their creativity, feasibility, relevance, and potential impact. Awards included vouchers, certificates, and exclusive Hyundai IONIQ 5 diecast models. Notable winners demonstrated human-centred designs and practical approaches to climate resilience, with special awards given for innovation, user experience, and feasibility. The competition not only showcased promising youth-led ideas but also contributed to Singapore’s ongoing efforts to build climate-resilient communities and smart mobility solutions.
