Hundreds Of New Fast Chargers Coming To Circle K Stores
Summary By: eMotoX
Circle K is set to significantly expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the United States through a new partnership with IONNA, an EV fast charging network supported by major automakers including Toyota, BMW, GM, Hyundai, Kia, and Honda. The collaboration will see the installation of 265 new fast charging stations at Circle K retail locations, alongside upgrades to existing chargers at 85 sites. This move aims to enhance convenience for EV drivers by integrating rapid charging facilities within trusted retail environments.
IONNA’s charging hubs are equipped with both NACS and CCS connectors, catering to a wide range of electric vehicles and offering amenities designed to improve the charging experience. Håkon Stiksrud, Circle K’s Vice President of Global eMobility, emphasised the importance of combining fast, reliable charging with a comprehensive retail experience, highlighting the company’s goal to make EV charging as accessible and seamless as possible. This strategy aligns with a broader trend of major retail chains, such as Walmart and Kroger, investing in EV infrastructure to attract customers who can charge their vehicles while shopping.
The rapid expansion of IONNA’s network is notable, with nearly 1,000 charging bays currently operational and over 4,700 bays contracted nationwide, including nearly 1,500 already under construction. This growth is seen as a critical factor in reducing range anxiety among EV drivers, as increased availability of public fast chargers in convenient locations diminishes the need for extremely long vehicle ranges. The development of such infrastructure persists despite political opposition to electric vehicles and clean energy initiatives in some quarters.
The proliferation of EV chargers at everyday retail outlets represents a shift in consumer behaviour and market dynamics, potentially encouraging more drivers to adopt electric vehicles. By offering charging alongside shopping and dining, retailers can attract a demographic with disposable income, turning charging stops into opportunities for additional sales. As the EV market continues to grow, partnerships like that between Circle K and IONNA are likely to play a pivotal role in supporting the transition to electric mobility across the US.
