Gotion and partners launch Europe-Africa electric logistics corridor

Summary By: eMotoX
Gotion, a Chinese battery manufacturer, has teamed up with Green Power Morocco (GPM) and Chery Heavy Trucks to establish an electric logistics corridor spanning from southern Morocco to southern France. This ambitious project targets a 2,000-kilometre freight route frequently used by around 2,000 heavy trucks daily, aiming to transition these vehicles to electric power. The initiative focuses on deploying electric trucks alongside the necessary charging and battery-swapping infrastructure to support sustainable cross-continental freight transport. The partners plan to introduce an initial fleet of 100 heavy-duty electric trucks equipped with Gotion’s battery systems, while Chery will contribute its expertise in commercial vehicle engineering and manufacturing. A key feature of the project is the development of a battery-swapping solution designed to reduce downtime and enhance operational efficiency for the trucks. This approach also involves efforts towards battery standardisation and lifecycle management, ensuring the technology is both practical and scalable. To oversee the operation, Gotion and GPM will create a joint venture responsible for managing electric fleets, battery-swapping stations, smart dispatching, and energy storage systems. The collaboration integrates electrification, energy infrastructure, and digital logistics to create a comprehensive model for lowering emissions in freight transport. Phil Jenkins, CEO of GPM Holding, highlighted the partnership’s potential by emphasising the combination of Gotion’s battery technology with Chery’s manufacturing capabilities to deliver tailored electric logistics solutions suited to regional demands. The project represents a significant step towards decarbonising freight movement between Europe and Africa, offering a blueprint for future sustainable logistics corridors. By addressing both vehicle technology and supporting infrastructure, the initiative could pave the way for broader adoption of electric heavy-duty transport in international trade routes. Continued development and deployment will be closely watched as the partners work to demonstrate the viability of electric logistics on a large scale.
