German shipbuilder unveils concept for a 80,000 tonne battery electric cruise ship
Summary By: eMotoX
German shipbuilder Meyer Werft has revealed an ambitious concept for what could become the world’s first fully battery electric cruise ship. The vessel, dubbed “Project Vision,” is designed to weigh over 80,000 gross tonnes and accommodate nearly 1,900 passengers. Unveiled at the Seatrade Cruise Global convention in Miami, the concept aims to slash greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 per cent, signalling a significant step towards decarbonising the cruise industry.
The ship would measure 275 metres in length and be powered by a battery system developed by Norwegian company Corvus Energy. This battery technology is already available and capable of supporting typical European cruise routes, such as the journey from Barcelona to Civitavecchia near Rome. Meyer Werft expects that, if ordered soon, the batteries could be delivered by 2031, indicating that fully electric cruise ships could become a reality within the next decade.
Innovative design features accompany the electric propulsion, including the removal of the traditional funnel and exhaust shaft, which are no longer necessary without combustion engines. This allows for a redesigned sun deck offering unobstructed views and a quieter, more comfortable onboard experience due to reduced engine noise and vibrations. Meyer Werft emphasises that the concept relies on existing technologies, presenting a competitive and sustainable product for future cruise operations.
Executives from both Meyer Werft and Corvus Energy highlighted the maturity and safety of the battery technology, suggesting that scaling up to fully electric cruise ships would demonstrate the readiness of the industry to embrace cleaner alternatives. The project reflects a broader commitment to innovation and sustainability, aiming to transform the environmental impact of large passenger vessels well ahead of current industry timelines.
