Fund offers Australian truck operators $100 million to go electric, at no upfront cost
Summary By: eMotoX
London-based company Zenobē has launched a $100 million funding initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric trucks among heavy vehicle fleet operators in Australia. The programme, announced at the Freight Forward conference in Canberra, offers financial support covering not only the purchase of electric trucks but also the necessary charging infrastructure, battery replacements, and deployment costs. By removing upfront capital expenses, Zenobē hopes to make the transition to electric vehicles commercially viable and competitive with diesel fleets in terms of total cost of ownership.
Zenobē’s country director for Australia and New Zealand, Gareth Ridge, emphasised the strategic importance of this investment, stating that decisions made in the next five years will shape the transport sector for decades. The company aims to double the number of heavy electric trucks on Australian roads by the end of 2024, building on the current fleet of around 1,000 vehicles. The funding programme targets medium to large fleet operators with depot-based operations or predictable routes, particularly those planning to electrify within the next one to three years.
The initiative also includes additional support such as no-cost feasibility studies, project design, and commercial proposal development, aiming to reduce peak electricity demand and lower operating costs. Key sectors expected to benefit include logistics and freight, waste management, municipal services, passenger transport, and service fleets in energy, industrial, and construction industries. This funding arrives at a critical juncture as many Australian trucks are reaching the end of their operational life amid rising fuel costs and growing environmental concerns.
With over half of Australia’s truck fleet aged more than ten years, operators face pressing decisions about replacement technologies. Zenobē’s programme offers a timely solution to ease the transition to zero-emission vehicles without imposing upfront financial burdens. The move could significantly influence the country’s freight sector, promoting sustainability while maintaining commercial competitiveness in a rapidly evolving market.
