Formula E Unveils GEN4 Car As Series Eyes Berlin Double-Header
Summary By: eMotoX
Formula E has unveiled its GEN4 race car, marking a significant technological leap for the all-electric series. The new machine made its public track debut at Circuit Paul Ricard, showcasing remarkable performance improvements over the current GEN3 model. Notably, the GEN4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.8 seconds, surpassing modern Formula 1 cars off the line. This is largely due to the car’s pioneering permanent all-wheel-drive system, which delivers up to 600 kW (816 PS) without the wheelspin issues that previously limited traction.
Beyond its raw speed, the GEN4 car emphasises sustainability, aligning with Formula E’s environmental ethos. It features recycled carbon fibre bodywork, a battery free from rare earth minerals, and is recognised as the world’s first fully recyclable race car. Citroën Racing attracted attention with a striking red-and-black camouflage livery during testing, though the team confirmed this is a temporary design ahead of a new look inspired by French heritage for the upcoming season.
With testing complete, the focus now shifts to the Berlin E-Prix double-header at Tempelhof Airport on 2 and 3 May 2026. The historic venue is notorious for its abrasive concrete surface, which poses a severe challenge for tyre management and energy strategy. Teams such as Jaguar TCS Racing and Porsche are dedicating extensive simulator time to mastering “tyre whispering,” a technique to preserve rubber on the punishing track. The Berlin races are expected to be pivotal in the tightly contested championship battle.
Heading into Berlin, Pascal Wehrlein leads the standings with 83 points but faces strong competition from Edoardo Mortara and Antonio Felix da Costa. Da Costa, in particular, arrives in excellent form following a commanding win in Madrid and will aim to exploit Jaguar’s efficiency advantage. The unique demands of Tempelhof, with its long straights and energy-draining surface, mean that managing battery usage will be as crucial as outright speed, adding a strategic layer to the title fight as the season reaches a critical juncture.
