For electric trucks, “the math is simple,” says Chinese heavy machinery OEM

Summary By: eMotoX
Electric trucks have reached a pivotal moment in their adoption, with total cost of ownership increasingly favouring electric models over traditional diesel trucks. Michael Yue, General Manager of Sany Heavy Industry’s truck division, simplifies the economic equation for fleet operators: in regions where diesel fuel costs at least ten times more per litre than electricity per kilowatt-hour, electric trucks recoup their higher upfront costs within 12 to 14 months. This straightforward comparison highlights the growing financial viability of electrification for commercial fleets, particularly in markets with steep diesel prices. Sany Heavy Industry, a major Chinese manufacturer, has witnessed a significant rise in battery-electric truck sales domestically, with electric vehicles accounting for approximately 11% of heavy long-distance trucks and 20% of smaller commercial vehicles sold in the past year. Facing a slowdown in China’s construction sector, Sany is now focusing on expanding its reach internationally. The company’s market strategy is heavily influenced by local fuel price dynamics, targeting countries where the cost disparity between diesel and electricity makes electric trucks economically attractive. Analysis by Bloomberg’s David Fickling supports Sany’s approach, revealing that nearly 40% of global diesel demand comes from countries where diesel is at least ten times more expensive than electricity. Even projections for 2025 suggest that over a third of global diesel consumption occurs in regions where the cost ratio remains close to this threshold. By 2030, BloombergNEF forecasts this multiple will fall to around four times, potentially enabling electric trucks to become the cheaper option even in oil-rich nations such as Saudi Arabia. While Europe continues to be a strong market for electric trucks due to stringent emissions regulations, Sany is also seeing growing interest from operators in emerging markets like South Africa, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. These regions, often grouped under the “Rest of World” category, are poised to leapfrog traditional markets such as the US and Europe in electric truck adoption. The interplay of local energy costs and regulatory pressures is reshaping the global landscape for heavy-duty electric vehicles, signalling a broader shift towards electrification in the commercial transport sector.
