Flemish transport agency deploys its 1,000th electric bus

De Lijn, the public transport agency serving the Flanders region of Belgium, has reached a significant milestone by deploying its 1,000th electric bus. This achievement forms part of a broader strategy to phase out diesel buses entirely by 2035, requiring the acquisition of a total fleet of 3,800 electric buses. The agency placed an order for over 650 new electric buses in 2025 alone, with plans to introduce these vehicles in stages over the coming years, signalling a strong commitment to sustainable and future-focused public transport. The shift to electric buses involves substantial investment beyond just the vehicles themselves. De Lijn is dedicating resources to upgrading charging infrastructure, energy supply systems, software platforms, and workforce training and maintenance capabilities. In 2025, around 1,400 drivers underwent specialised training tailored to electric buses, while 176 technicians received instruction in electromechanics. This comprehensive approach reflects the different operational and maintenance requirements of electric buses, which rely more on data-driven preventive care rather than the reactive mechanical repairs typical of diesel fleets. Officials have highlighted the broader benefits of this transition for both passengers and the environment. Flemish Minister of Mobility Annick De Ridder emphasised the government’s financial backing, noting a €400 million investment to accelerate the purchase of electric buses. Meanwhile, De Lijn’s Director-General Ann Schoub pointed to the visible improvements in service quality, including quieter and more comfortable rides, as well as the long-term goal of delivering fully emission-free public transport. The move is expected to positively impact air quality, reduce noise pollution, and enhance overall urban livability across Flanders. Looking ahead, De Lijn’s ambitious electrification plan will require ongoing coordination and investment to ensure the successful integration of new technologies and operational practices. The agency’s focus on training and software development suggests a strategic emphasis on innovation and reliability, which will be crucial as the fleet expands. This transition not only aligns with broader environmental targets but also positions Flanders as a leader in sustainable public transport within Europe.
