EV chargers to be rolled out across aged care facilities

Summary By: eMotoX
Origin Energy is collaborating with the Uniting Church to install 42 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across 21 aged care facilities in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. This initiative aims to provide convenient charging options for both staff and residents who drive electric cars, addressing concerns about accessibility to charging infrastructure. The rollout is part of a broader sustainability strategy by Uniting NSW.ACT, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner energy use within its operations. Michael Mathias, environmental sustainability manager at Uniting NSW.ACT, highlighted that the EV charger installation complements the organisation’s ongoing efforts to transition its vehicle fleet towards full electrification. Currently, Uniting operates 12 electric vehicles supported by 30 charging stations, with plans to expand this infrastructure in the coming years. Installation of the new chargers is set to begin at the end of May, accompanied by an “EV roadshow” designed to engage employees and provide information about electric vehicles and charging. Transport accounts for a significant portion of Uniting’s environmental impact, consuming 909 kilolitres of fuel in 2024, which represents around 13 per cent of its total energy use and approximately 7.5 per cent of its carbon emissions. The introduction of these EV chargers is a key step towards Uniting’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. By increasing access to EV charging, the organisation hopes to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles among staff and residents, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The partnership between Origin Energy and the Uniting Church reflects a growing trend within the aged care sector to embrace sustainable technologies and practices. This project not only supports environmental objectives but also enhances the appeal and functionality of aged care facilities by catering to the evolving needs of their communities. As the rollout progresses, it may serve as a model for other organisations seeking to integrate clean energy solutions into their operations.
