Europe EV Sales Report: BEVs Jump 42% and Reach 23% Market Share!

Summary By: eMotoX
Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Europe have surged significantly, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) experiencing a 42% year-on-year increase in April 2026, capturing 23% of the market share. Overall, plug-in vehicles accounted for 33% of new car registrations, driven by factors including new model launches, rising fuel prices, and the influx of Chinese EVs. Meanwhile, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles continue to decline sharply, with petrol and diesel shares dropping to 22% and 7% respectively, while hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) maintain steady growth, although PHEV expansion appears to be slowing. The dominance of BEVs within the plugin segment is becoming more pronounced, with BEVs representing 68% of all plugin sales in April, pushing the year-to-date BEV market share to 22%. This figure already exceeds the projected 2025 final share, indicating strong momentum towards electrification targets. Combined with HEVs and PHEVs, nearly 70% of new cars sold in Europe now feature some form of electrification, signalling a significant shift in consumer preferences and industry focus towards sustainable mobility. Among the best-selling EV models, Skoda made a notable impact by placing two vehicles in the top five for April. The Skoda Elroq led the pack with over 10,800 registrations, marking a 34% increase compared to the previous year. However, its dominance may be challenged later in 2026 by the upcoming Skoda Epiq, a smaller and more affordable crossover expected to attract buyers away from the Elroq. Other top performers included the BMW iX1 and its plug-in hybrid variant, the Renault 5 (including the Alpine A290), the refreshed Skoda Enyaq, and the BYD Seal U, which benefited from aggressive discounting to maintain its European presence despite waning popularity in its home market. Looking ahead, the European EV market is poised for continued growth and diversification. German manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz are intensifying efforts to boost EV sales with new models such as the CLA EV station wagon, GLB EV seven-seater, and GLC EV midsizer, aiming to improve their competitive positioning by 2027. The evolving landscape, characterised by strong BEV adoption and increasing model variety, suggests that Europe is on track to meet ambitious electrification goals well before the mid-2030s target for near-total plug-in vehicle market share.
