EQONIC wins UK grant to develop digital twin manufacturing and end-of-life battery disassembly line
Summary By: eMotoX
EQONIC Group, a UK-based battery manufacturer, has secured funding from the UK government’s Battery Innovation Programme, a £452 million initiative led by Innovate UK and the Department for Business and Trade. The grant will facilitate the development of a comprehensive digital twin of EQONIC’s proprietary battery manufacturing process, alongside a flexible production and disassembly line capable of managing both battery assembly and end-of-life processing within a unified industrial system. This innovative approach aims to enhance manufacturing efficiency and scalability while addressing the challenges of battery lifecycle management.
The digital twin technology will enable EQONIC to optimise production workflows, reduce variability between batches, and provide a robust platform to demonstrate manufacturing capabilities to potential partners. To support this ambitious project, EQONIC is collaborating with Ellaniti, a consultancy specialising in manufacturing strategy, to ensure effective industrialisation planning. This partnership highlights the company’s commitment to integrating advanced digital solutions with practical manufacturing processes.
Jas Kandola, CEO of EQONIC Group, emphasised the significance of the grant, describing the Battery Innovation Programme as one of the UK’s most stringent technical and commercial evaluations in the battery sector. He noted that being selected not only endorses EQONIC’s technological innovations but also validates its commercial strategy. This recognition positions EQONIC as a promising player in the rapidly evolving battery manufacturing landscape.
The successful development and implementation of the digital twin and reconfigurable production line could have far-reaching implications for the UK’s battery industry, potentially accelerating domestic manufacturing capabilities and supporting sustainability goals through improved end-of-life battery processing. EQONIC’s project aligns with broader government efforts to establish the UK as a leader in battery technology and circular economy practices.
