Energy Bank to install 200 bidirectional chargers in Swedish V2X pilot

Energy Bank, a Swedish-Swiss energy optimisation firm, is advancing its vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology by installing 200 bidirectional chargers across Sweden. Building on a successful 15-month trial at the Stenberg Housing Association in Hudiksvall, the company is collaborating with Vattenfall, Volkswagen, and Transtema Charge to launch a larger pilot programme. This initiative will connect private and business EV owners to the grid, allowing their vehicles to provide energy services in exchange for compensation, marking a significant move towards a commercial V2X offering.
The pilot utilises DC charging via the CCS standard, with Volkswagen’s MEB and MEB Plus platforms supporting bidirectional charging capabilities. Energy Bank serves as the technical aggregator, pooling flexibility from all connected EVs and integrating it with Vattenfall’s systems through an API. Unlike other aggregators that control how energy flexibility is deployed, Energy Bank hands over control directly to grid operators or electricity suppliers, emphasising a decentralised approach to energy management.
Key figures involved in the project highlight its potential impact on the energy transition. Klas Boman, co-founder of Energy Bank, stresses that EVs can become active participants in the energy system, creating a new market where mobility and energy intersect. Vattenfall’s Magnus Berg points to the dual benefits of grid support and improved EV ownership economics, while Volkswagen’s Derek von Rönn highlights the readiness of their vehicles to act as mobile energy assets capable of delivering multiple grid services with rapid response times.
This pilot represents an important step in integrating electric vehicles more deeply into energy networks, potentially enhancing grid stability and flexibility while providing financial incentives to EV owners. If successful, the project could pave the way for broader adoption of bidirectional charging technology and new business models that link transportation and energy sectors more closely.
