Emobi and DIMO deliver customized Plug & Charge-enabled EV charging for fleets

Summary By: eMotoX
Emobi and DIMO have joined forces to introduce a new device that enables electric vehicle fleets to adopt Plug & Charge technology using Emobi’s ISO 15118-based JustPlug solution. This system automates user authentication and payment without the need for apps, RFID cards, or other manual methods, promising a more seamless charging experience. While Plug & Charge is already established in parts of Europe, its broader adoption has been hindered by technical challenges, particularly because many existing EVs lack native support for the standard. The collaboration between Emobi and DIMO addresses these limitations by providing ISO 15118 digital certificates directly to vehicles through DIMO’s physical or virtual devices, bypassing the need for automaker-issued certificates. This aftermarket solution acts as a bridge, enabling Plug & Charge functionality without requiring firmware updates, hardware changes, or manufacturer involvement. Emobi’s JustPlug technology manages these certificates at the fleet level, simplifying the deployment process and making the system accessible to any fleet or driver regardless of the vehicle model. Lin Sun Fa, CEO of Emobi, emphasised that the industry has long promised a seamless Plug & Charge experience, but widespread implementation has been slow. By empowering fleets to control certificate issuance independently, the new solution unlocks Plug & Charge capabilities for a wider range of vehicles today. Meanwhile, DIMO co-founder Yevgeny Khessin highlighted that this technology is just the starting point, with potential to extend beyond charging to services like tolling, parking, insurance, and other connected features that can activate per trip. The introduction of this device could mark a significant step forward in accelerating the adoption of Plug & Charge across diverse EV fleets, overcoming current barriers linked to vehicle compatibility and manufacturer dependency. As the technology matures and expands into additional connected services, it may reshape how electric vehicle fleets manage charging and related mobility functions, enhancing convenience and operational efficiency.
