Electric J5 SUV helps Omoda Jaecoo become fastest brand to one million sales
Summary By: eMotoX
Chinese automaker Chery has announced that its Omoda Jaecoo sub-brand has become the fastest to reach one million global sales, achieving this milestone within just three years. A significant contributor to this rapid growth is the recently launched J5 electric SUV, which entered the Australian market late last year and quickly amassed 4,000 orders in a few months. The milestone was celebrated at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, where Omoda Jaecoo also outlined plans to focus on new energy vehicles (NEVs), including electric and hybrid models, as the main driver of its expansion in the coming year.
The J5 electric SUV stands out for its competitive pricing and solid specifications. Priced aggressively at $36,990 driveaway in Australia, the vehicle secured 2,000 orders within its first three months, with demand further boosted by rising fuel prices. The J5 is powered by a front-mounted 155 kW motor delivering 288 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.7 seconds. It offers a WLTP range of up to 402 km from its 58.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and features vehicle-to-load functionality, making it a practical choice for mid-size electric SUVs.
Inside, the J5 boasts a minimalist cabin equipped with a 13.2-inch vertical touchscreen that controls various functions such as air conditioning and media. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a 50 W wireless charger, catering to tech-savvy drivers. The vehicle’s interior uses a unique silicone-based synthetic leather that is antibacterial, wear-resistant, and easy to clean, reflecting Jaecoo’s rugged, lifestyle-oriented brand identity. Additionally, the J5 comes with an extensive eight-year unlimited-kilometre warranty covering the vehicle, servicing, and battery pack.
At the Beijing Auto Show, Omoda Jaecoo also unveiled several new models aimed at younger buyers and those seeking hybrid options, including the Omoda 4 and larger Jaecoo 7 and 8 PHEVs, as well as Super Hybrid System-equipped versions of the Omoda 5 and Jaecoo 5. The brand is further advancing its technology offerings with plans to expand AI-driven navigation and Valet Parking Driver features. With a growing local dealer network and a broadening model range, Omoda Jaecoo is poised for significant growth in 2026 and may soon break into the top five electric vehicle sales charts in Australia.
