Construction starts on Sydney’s first purpose-built electric bus depot

Construction has commenced on Sydney’s first purpose-built electric bus depot at Macquarie Park, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transition to zero-emission public transport. The $145 million facility is designed specifically to accommodate and charge up to 150 battery electric buses, distinguishing it from existing depots retrofitted for electric operations. The project is a joint initiative between the state and federal governments, with New Zealand-based civil engineering firm Fulton Hogan appointed to deliver the depot, which is expected to be operational by 2028. The Macquarie Park depot will feature a mix of 75 kW standard chargers and 150 kW fast plug-in chargers, supporting efficient turnaround times for the electric fleet. It will also create approximately 160 jobs, spanning drivers, maintenance staff, and administrative roles, contributing to local employment during both construction and operational phases. This development aligns with New South Wales’ broader strategy to electrify its bus fleet of around 8,000 vehicles over the next two decades, reducing reliance on diesel and gas-powered buses. NSW Minister for Transport John Graham highlighted the importance of the new depot in delivering cleaner, quieter, and smoother bus services across Sydney’s northwest and lower north shore regions. He emphasised the dual benefits of environmental improvements and job creation, noting the depot’s role in supporting communities heavily dependent on bus transport. The Macquarie Park facility complements ongoing upgrades at Sydney’s other 11 bus depots, including the Brookvale depot, which was the first to install fast-charging infrastructure in September 2025. This purpose-built depot represents a forward-looking investment in sustainable urban mobility, signalling a clear commitment to decarbonising public transport infrastructure. As the electric bus network expands, the depot will play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of services, while also supporting the state’s climate objectives. The project sets a precedent for future developments tailored specifically to electric vehicle requirements, potentially influencing similar initiatives across Australia and beyond.
