Chery considering small electric hatchback for Australia market

Chery, one of China’s leading automotive manufacturers, is exploring the introduction of a small electric hatchback, the Q, to the Australian market. The vehicle was recently presented to media representatives from Australia and New Zealand at an event in Wuhu, China. This rear-wheel-drive hatchback measures nearly 4.2 metres in length and is powered by a 90 kW rear-mounted electric motor paired with a 42 kWh battery, offering a range of approximately 300 km under the WLTP cycle used locally. The Chery Q boasts a well-appointed interior, featuring a flat-bottom steering wheel, a digital instrument panel, and a prominent 15.6-inch centre touchscreen powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip. Additional amenities include ambient lighting and a wireless phone charger, enhancing the cabin’s modern appeal. Despite its compact size, the hatchback offers a generous boot capacity of 375 litres, expandable to 1,450 litres with the rear seats folded, making it practical for everyday use. Originally unveiled as the QQ3 at the 2025 Chengdu Auto Show, the model has garnered significant attention in China, accumulating tens of thousands of orders. Its planned expansion into overseas markets positions it against competitors such as the Geely EX2, MG4 Urban, and BYD Dolphin. While pricing details for Australia have yet to be announced, the top-spec version retails for just over AU$16,000 in China, suggesting a competitive entry point in the local EV market. Initial impressions from a brief test drive indicate the Chery Q is surprisingly spacious and enjoyable to drive, particularly through tight manoeuvres like slalom courses. The arrival of this compact electric hatchback in Australia is a welcome development, broadening the range of affordable EV options for first-time buyers.
