Electric vehicle (EV) owners often underestimate just how economical it is to charge their cars, with costs significantly lower than many expect. A key reason lies in the time-of-use pricing schemes employed by many electricity providers, which offer substantially cheaper rates during off-peak hours, typically overnight. Charging an EV at home during these super off-peak periods can reduce electricity costs to a fraction of daytime rates, making overnight charging an exceptionally cost-effective option for most drivers. Another important factor contributing to the affordability of EVs is their superior energy efficiency compared to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles. Electric powertrains convert a much higher percentage of the energy they consume into actual movement, often between 77% and 90%, whereas internal combustion engines typically convert only 12% to 30% of fuel energy. This efficiency means that even when electricity prices are comparable to fuel costs, EVs still tend to be cheaper to run over equivalent distances. Public fast charging, often cited as a potential expense, tends to be less representative of typical EV running costs since most drivers primarily rely on home or workplace charging. Fast chargers can be more expensive and closer in cost to petrol, but their use is generally infrequent. Many other charging options, including Level 2 chargers at retail locations, offer lower or even free charging, further reducing the overall cost of operating an electric vehicle. The combination of off-peak electricity pricing and the inherent efficiency of electric motors results in substantial savings for EV owners. For example, charging overnight at a low rate can enable an EV to travel nearly 200 miles for the same cost as a petrol car would cover just 30 miles. This stark contrast highlights the financial benefits of switching to electric, benefits that even some current EV owners may not fully appreciate.
