CATL debuts six stunning battery innovations, including 1,500km EV option and 6-minute charge

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has unveiled six groundbreaking battery technologies at its 2026 “Super Technology Day,” showcasing significant advancements in electric vehicle (EV) performance and charging capabilities. Among the highlights is a new battery offering an unprecedented driving range of up to 1,500 kilometres, alongside the third generation of its Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery, which can recharge from 10 to 90 per cent in just over six minutes. Testing indicates that the battery retains over 90 per cent of its capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles, striking a balance between ultra-fast charging speeds and long service life. Notably, it can charge from 10 to 35 per cent in one minute and from 10 to 80 per cent in under four minutes, with impressive performance maintained even in extreme cold conditions as low as −30°C. CATL’s third-generation Qilin Battery also stands out, utilising lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry optimised for long-range EVs. This battery achieves a cell energy density of 280 Wh/kg, enabling ranges of up to 1,000 kilometres while supporting rapid 10C charging and delivering peak power of 3 MW. The design reduces weight and volume compared to previous LFP systems, improving energy efficiency and vehicle performance. Complementing this is the newly introduced Qilin Condensed Battery, which applies aviation-grade materials to achieve a record-breaking energy density of 350 Wh/kg, translating to driving ranges of up to 1,500 kilometres for sedans. In addition to battery innovations, CATL revealed a comprehensive charging ecosystem that integrates home charging, public supercharging, and battery swapping into a unified network. This system aims to optimise charging efficiency and convenience, with plans to deploy 4,000 integrated charge-swap stations across nearly 190 Chinese cities by the end of 2026. These stations will support both passenger vehicles and heavy trucks, utilising the Shenxing supercharging technology to reduce energy losses and streamline the charging process. CATL’s latest advancements signal a significant leap forward in EV battery technology, addressing key challenges such as range anxiety, charging speed, and durability. The company’s commitment to scaling up production of sodium-ion batteries and expanding its integrated charging infrastructure could have far-reaching implications for the adoption of electric vehicles, particularly in markets where rapid charging and long-distance travel remain critical concerns.
