BYD reveals tight Blade battery supply, thanks to massive success of new models

BYD, one of the world’s fastest-growing electric vehicle manufacturers, has announced a current tight supply of its new Blade Battery technology, driven by overwhelming demand for its latest models. The company’s Chairman and President, Wang Chuanfu, revealed at a recent business conference that production is struggling to keep pace with orders, but significant expansion plans are underway to increase output in the coming months. This supply constraint comes shortly after BYD introduced its groundbreaking 5-minute Flash Charging capability, which is set to be featured in dozens of new models launching in 2026. The Blade Battery, a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) pack, combines enhanced safety with rapid charging speeds of up to 1,500 kW, enabling a 10-70% charge in just five minutes and a near-full charge in around nine minutes. This technology is being integrated across a wide range of vehicles, from luxury models like the BYD Datang—which has amassed over 100,000 pre-orders since its debut—to more affordable options such as the e7 sedan and the Yuan Plus SUV. The latter, unveiled at Auto China 2026, includes a new 57.5 kWh battery variant designed to appeal to entry-level buyers while maintaining the brand’s safety and performance standards. BYD’s aggressive rollout of Flash Charging infrastructure is progressing rapidly, with nearly 6,000 stations operational across more than 310 Chinese cities, already surpassing 25% of the company’s 2026 target of 20,000 sites. Plans to expand this network internationally are also underway, including deployments in Australia aligned with the launch of the Denza Z9 GT later this year. This infrastructure push aims to support the growing fleet of vehicles equipped with the Blade Battery, ensuring that customers can benefit from ultra-fast charging speeds and greater convenience. The current supply bottleneck is expected to ease as BYD scales up production capacity, allowing the company to meet the surging demand and deliver its innovative battery technology to a broader customer base over the next year. This development marks a significant step forward in the EV industry, positioning BYD as a leader in battery innovation and fast-charging solutions, which could reshape consumer expectations around electric vehicle usability and charging times globally.
