BYD launches new electric sedan with 5 minute Flash Charging, under $A22,600
Summary By: eMotoX
BYD has introduced its latest electric sedan, the Linghui e7, targeting the ridesharing market with an affordable price point and advanced charging technology. The new model is priced under A$22,600, with base versions starting below A$20,000, making it one of BYD’s most accessible offerings. A standout feature is the company’s innovative 5-minute Flash Charging capability, which allows the battery to charge from 10 to 70 per cent in just five minutes, significantly reducing downtime for drivers.
The e7 utilises BYD’s latest Blade Battery technology, specifically Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells, which combine enhanced safety with rapid charging rates of up to 1,500 kW at dedicated Flash Charging stations. BYD is aggressively expanding its charging infrastructure in China, currently operating over 5,000 stations across numerous cities, with plans to increase this to 20,000 bays by year-end. To encourage adoption, the company is offering one year of free Flash Charging for fleet and ridesharing operators, facilitating a practical trial of the new technology.
In terms of specifications, the Linghui e7 measures 4,780 mm in length, slightly smaller than BYD’s Seal sedan, and features a modern interior with a 15.6-inch infotainment screen and wireless phone charging. The vehicle is powered by rear-mounted electric motors available in 100 kW and 130 kW variants, paired with 51.3 kWh or 61.4 kWh battery packs. It delivers an NEDC range between 450 and 550 km, which translates to approximately 380 to 480 km under the more stringent WLTP testing cycle, positioning it as a competitive alternative to conventional petrol sedans like the Toyota Corolla.
Industry observers note that the Linghui e7 could be transformative for the ridesharing sector, particularly in China, by offering drivers a more efficient and environmentally friendly option with minimal charging interruptions. The combination of affordability, rapid charging, and practical range may also influence global markets as BYD continues to expand its electric vehicle footprint. The e7’s launch underscores BYD’s commitment to reducing transport emissions and improving EV accessibility, signalling potential shifts in urban mobility and fleet electrification worldwide.
