BYD launches new Dolphin option as a small, low cost electric cargo van
Summary By: eMotoX
BYD has introduced a new variant of its Dolphin electric hatchback tailored specifically for last-mile delivery operators. The Dolphin Cargo e-Van replaces the rear seats with a full metal bulkhead, creating over 1,090 litres of cargo space while retaining the compact dimensions of the original model. At just 4,290 mm in length, the van offers practical loading dimensions suitable for urban logistics, including a maximum load length of 1,250 mm and a width between the wheel arches of 1,018 mm.
The vehicle is powered by BYD’s 60 kWh blade battery, delivering a WLTP combined range exceeding 500 km, which allows for a full day of operation without the need for recharging. Designed with fleet requirements in mind, the Dolphin Cargo e-Van features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, enabling it to power external equipment such as tools and lighting directly from the vehicle. Additional comfort and efficiency features include a heat pump, heated steering wheel and front seats, which focus warmth on the driver rather than the cargo area, thereby optimising battery use.
Safety and convenience have been prioritised with a 360-degree parking camera to aid manoeuvrability in tight city environments, alongside standard connectivity options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. BYD also offers bespoke fleet customisation options, including reversing alarms, amber warning beacons, vehicle signage, and tailored storage solutions to meet specific operational needs. This flexibility aims to enhance the vehicle’s appeal to a broad range of commercial users.
Available now through UK dealerships, the Dolphin Cargo e-Van starts at £29,358, making it competitively priced below the standard hatchback variant. Its combination of compact size, electric efficiency, and practical cargo capacity positions it as an attractive option for businesses looking to reduce emissions and operational costs amid rising diesel prices. BYD’s latest offering reflects the growing trend towards electrification in urban delivery fleets, providing a sustainable alternative suited to the demands of modern logistics.
