BYD launches new Atto 3 with flash charging, new batteries and a low price

Summary By: eMotoX
BYD has unveiled the third-generation Yuan Plus, known as the Atto 3 in Australia, featuring significant upgrades including rapid flash charging, larger dimensions, and an updated design. The new model was revealed at Auto China 2026 and is priced competitively in China, starting at under A$25,000 and rising to around A$31,000 for the top-tier version. Since its Australian debut in 2022, the Atto 3 has been a popular affordable electric SUV, and this latest iteration aims to enhance its appeal with improved range, faster charging capabilities, and a more spacious body. The updated Yuan Plus offers two powertrain options: a rear-mounted 200 kW motor paired with a 57.5 kWh Blade Battery, delivering an estimated 540 km on the CLTC cycle (approximately 450 km WLTP), and a more powerful 240 kW motor with a 68.5 kWh battery, capable of up to 630 km CLTC range. Both variants support BYD’s new Flash Charging technology, which can recharge the battery from 10 to 70 per cent in just five minutes, or up to 97 per cent in around nine minutes. This rapid charging is enabled by advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries and a growing network of Flash Charging stations, with over 5,000 sites already operational across 292 Chinese cities. The new model also features a shift to rear-wheel drive, a larger 4,665 mm body length, and a modernised interior with a 15.6-inch infotainment screen and a wireless phone charger. BYD has relocated the gear shifter to the steering wheel, creating a cleaner cabin layout compared to earlier versions. Despite these enhancements, it remains uncertain when or if this third-generation Atto 3 will be introduced to the Australian market, especially given recent indications that a new Evo variant with rear-wheel drive may arrive first. The launch of the refreshed Yuan Plus underscores BYD’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle offerings with competitive pricing and cutting-edge technology. The rapid expansion of the Flash Charging network is particularly noteworthy, as it addresses one of the key barriers to EV adoption—charging time. As BYD continues to grow its presence globally, the Atto 3’s evolution will be closely watched by markets like Australia and New Zealand, where affordable, long-range electric SUVs are in increasing demand.
