BYD expands popular Shark 6 ute lineup in Australia, now with 3.5 tonne towing

Summary By: eMotoX
BYD has expanded its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute range in Australia with the introduction of two new variants: a fleet-oriented Dynamic cab-chassis model and a Performance version boasting a towing capacity exceeding 3.5 tonnes. The updated lineup now offers three distinct options, catering to a broad spectrum of buyers, from tradespeople requiring a robust workhorse to drivers seeking enhanced performance and towing capabilities. Since its launch in late 2024, the Shark 6 has proven popular, securing over 4,000 orders shortly after release and setting a competitive starting price below $58,000 before on-road costs. The Dynamic cab-chassis variant is designed with practicality in mind, featuring a heavy-duty alloy tray developed in collaboration with aftermarket specialist Ironman. This tray, available as an optional extra, includes multiple tie-down points and lockable toolboxes, engineered to withstand harsh Australian conditions such as UV exposure, salt spray, and vibration. Meanwhile, the Performance model is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged dual-mode super hybrid powertrain delivering 350 kW and 700 Nm, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.5 seconds. This variant also introduces a new Crawl Mode for enhanced off-road traction, complementing the existing Mountain Mode and improving capability on challenging terrain. The Performance variant’s towing credentials are particularly notable, with a braked towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes and a Gross Combination Mass of 6,650 kg. It also features a class-leading tow ball download rating of 350 kg, which contributes to improved stability when hauling heavy trailers or caravans. All Shark 6 models benefit from an EV-only driving mode, offering an electric range of up to 100 km under ideal conditions, sufficient for most daily commutes without using fuel. Over-the-air updates will soon enable the new Crawl Mode on existing Premium and future Dynamic models, enhancing off-road functionality across the range. BYD’s expansion of the Shark 6 range underscores the growing demand for versatile, efficient utes in the Australian market and places pressure on established competitors such as Toyota and Ford to accelerate their hybrid and electric offerings. The combination of strong performance, practical features, and advanced hybrid technology has helped the Shark 6 carve out a significant presence among Australian drivers, including those already committed to electric vehicles. With these new variants, BYD aims to broaden its appeal further, addressing the needs of both commercial and recreational users in a competitive segment.
