Boreal Orders 20 Candela Electric Ferries For Use In Norway
Summary By: eMotoX
Norwegian transportation company Boreal has placed an order for 20 Candela P-12 electric fast ferries to replace diesel-powered vessels on cross-fjord routes. This move addresses the challenge of Norway’s fjord-laden coastline, where diesel ferries have long been essential but contribute to pollution and rely on fluctuating fuel supplies. The P-12 model offers a combination of high speed and extended range, cruising at 25 knots with a 40-nautical-mile range, making it suitable for routes previously dominated by diesel ferries.
The Candela P-12’s standout feature is its computer-controlled hydrofoils, which lift the vessel above the water at speeds over 18 knots, significantly reducing drag and energy consumption by approximately 80 percent compared to conventional ferries. This technology also ensures a smooth and quiet ride, with cabin noise levels measured at just 64 decibels—quieter than trains and aircraft. The ferries can recharge fully in an hour using Level 3 DC fast chargers, avoiding the need for costly megawatt-scale charging infrastructure.
Boreal’s CEO, Nikolai Knudsmoen Utheim, emphasised the company’s ambition to expand zero-emission high-speed travel along Norway’s coast and beyond, highlighting the potential for new routes in both urban and rural areas. Candela’s European Director, Alexander Sifvert, noted that the partnership reflects a broader shift toward electrification in maritime transport, driven by both environmental and economic factors. Boreal’s investment is underpinned by a strong business case, with lower fuel and maintenance costs expected to make the electric ferries profitable while enhancing passenger comfort and service frequency.
Deliveries of the P-12 ferries will begin in 2027, with the initial two vessels entering service on selected Norwegian routes, followed by further deliveries through to 2030. Norway’s abundant hydropower resources provide a cost-effective and sustainable electricity supply for the ferries, reinforcing the country’s leadership in electric transport. This initiative marks a significant step in decarbonising maritime travel in Norway, offering a scalable model that could influence ferry operations in other regions.
