Battery Giant CATL Expects Half Of Its 2030 Sales Will Be For Energy Storage

China’s CATL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, has announced that it anticipates stationary energy storage systems will account for half of its battery sales by 2030, a significant rise from the current 25%. This projection marks a rapid shift from just five years ago when energy storage represented only 2% of its sales. Founded in 2011, CATL has grown alongside the electric vehicle revolution and is now positioning itself to capitalise on the expanding demand for batteries used in stationary applications rather than solely in EVs. The surge in stationary battery storage demand is closely linked to the global expansion of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. These intermittent energy sources require efficient storage solutions to balance supply and demand, storing excess power generated during peak production for use when generation is low. CATL’s focus on energy storage aligns with this trend, reflecting broader industry movements towards integrating large-scale battery systems to stabilise electricity grids and support sustainable energy infrastructures. Kevin Tang, CATL’s director of energy storage systems for Europe, highlighted the company’s strategic efforts to control its supply chain, including lithium mining operations in southern China and running the world’s largest battery recycling plant. These initiatives aim to secure raw materials and promote sustainability within the battery production cycle. CATL’s manufacturing footprint extends across Europe, with factories in Germany and Hungary, and a new facility under construction in Spain through a joint venture with Stellantis, signalling its commitment to expanding production capacity closer to key markets. The anticipated growth in stationary storage sales underscores the evolving role of batteries beyond electric vehicles, positioning CATL as a pivotal player in the transition to renewable energy. As the industry continues to develop, CATL’s integrated approach to resource management and manufacturing expansion could set a benchmark for other battery producers. This shift also suggests that energy storage will become an increasingly vital component of global energy systems, potentially reshaping market dynamics and investment priorities in the coming decade.
