B2U and Waymo partner to give autonomous EV fleet batteries a second life

B2U Storage Solutions has entered into a strategic partnership with Waymo to repurpose batteries from Waymo’s autonomous electric vehicle fleet once they are retired from automotive use. These second-life battery packs will be integrated into stationary energy storage systems connected to the electric grid, providing essential grid services across regions where Waymo operates, including California and Texas. The collaboration seeks to establish a sustainable lifecycle for EV batteries, reducing electronic waste while enhancing grid reliability through renewable energy storage. The repurposed battery systems will capture surplus renewable energy during periods of low demand and release it during peak consumption, thus supporting the stability and capacity of local power grids. B2U’s technology focuses on extracting residual value from used EV batteries, offering an alternative to traditional recycling methods that often discard significant remaining battery potential. The company will oversee the management of these storage units throughout their extended lifespan, ensuring responsible recycling once their usefulness in grid applications concludes. Freeman Hall, CEO of B2U Storage Solutions, highlighted the agreement as a pivotal step in delivering integrated repurposing services to the automotive sector, emphasising the economic benefits of maximising battery life beyond vehicle use. Adam Lenz, Head of Sustainability & Environment at Waymo, underscored the environmental and economic advantages of the initiative, noting that repurposing batteries supports the growth of clean energy infrastructure while advancing the circular economy. Both executives framed the partnership as a model for how EV fleets can contribute to sustainable energy solutions beyond their primary function.
