4R Battery Alliance calls for EV battery testing to be part of the UK’s MOT testing regime

Summary By: eMotoX
The 4R Battery Alliance, a coalition representing various stakeholders in the electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain, is urging the UK government to incorporate EV battery testing into the country’s existing MOT (Ministry of Transport) testing regime. While recent updates to the MOT have introduced additional safety checks specific to EVs, such as inspections of high-voltage cabling and battery mountings, the actual testing of battery health remains absent. The Alliance argues that integrating battery diagnostics into the MOT would help detect safety risks like fires and failures, while also providing valuable data on battery degradation and optimal charging practices. Central to the Alliance’s campaign is the promotion of its “four Rs” approach to battery stewardship: Repair, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle. By assessing battery condition through standardised testing, it would become easier to identify batteries that can be repaired or repurposed for second-life applications, as well as those that have reached the end of their service life and require recycling. This enhanced visibility into battery health is seen as critical for developing a more sustainable and circular economy around EV batteries, reducing waste and maximising resource efficiency. The 4R Battery Alliance also highlights the potential benefits for the used EV market, where concerns over battery condition often deter buyers. An independent and reliable battery test as part of the MOT could provide greater transparency and confidence for consumers considering second-hand electric vehicles. This, in turn, could stimulate demand and support a more robust market for used EVs, addressing one of the key barriers to wider EV adoption. Tom Rumboll, Chair of the 4R Battery Alliance, emphasised that battery testing is essential to enabling a circular economy for EV batteries. He described it as a vital step towards normalising battery diagnostics as a routine aspect of EV ownership, which would facilitate large-scale reuse, repurposing, and recycling. The Alliance’s call reflects a broader industry push to integrate battery health monitoring into standard vehicle maintenance, aligning with environmental and safety objectives as EVs become increasingly prevalent on UK roads.
