2027 Volvo EX60 First Drive: Volvo starts over on EVs with midsize SUV

Summary By: eMotoX
Volvo has introduced the 2027 EX60, a midsize electric SUV that marks a fresh start for the brand’s EV lineup. It follows the larger EX90, Volvo’s first dedicated battery-electric vehicle, but the EX60 is built on a new platform designed specifically for electric powertrains. The EX60 will be available in three variants—P6, P10, and P12—offering EPA-rated ranges exceeding 300 miles, with prices starting at $59,795 for the base P6 Plus model. Production for the US market began in April, with the P6 and P10 versions arriving at dealerships this summer and the P12 expected shortly thereafter. Stylistically, the EX60 retains Volvo’s distinctive design language while adopting a sharper, more modern aesthetic compared to its petrol-powered XC60 sibling. The exterior features a flat front panel with the signature Volvo “ironmark” emblem and vertical rear lights that blend seamlessly into the bodywork. Inside, the cabin embraces Scandinavian minimalism with a tech-forward approach, highlighted by a 15-inch central touchscreen and an 11.4-inch digital driver display, reducing reliance on physical buttons and controls. Performance-wise, the EX60 offers a range of powertrains to suit different needs. The entry-level P6 model delivers 369 horsepower from a single rear motor, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The P10 variant features dual motors producing a combined 503 horsepower and a quicker 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. The top-tier P12 promises up to 400 miles of range, although exact pricing has yet to be announced. The SUV’s regenerative braking system is well-tuned and intuitive, providing a smooth driving experience that balances energy recovery with driver comfort. The EX60’s driving dynamics benefit from its relatively light weight for an EV in this segment, ranging from 4,660 to 5,140 pounds, making it more agile than the larger EX90. It offers multiple regenerative braking modes, including a “One-pedal drive” setting that requires some manual braking at low speeds. Charging capabilities are robust, with a 19.2 kW onboard AC charger and DC fast-charging up to 350 kW, allowing for rapid replenishment of the battery in as little as 16 minutes under optimal conditions. North American models will feature the Tesla-compatible NACS charging port, enhancing compatibility with existing charging infrastructure. With the EX60, Volvo aims to strengthen its position in the competitive luxury electric SUV market, going head-to-head with rivals such as the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz’s forthcoming GLC EV, and the Tesla Model Y. The new model arrives at a critical time for Volvo, which has faced challenges including import tariffs, the loss of federal EV incentives, and the discontinuation of its more affordable EX30 model. The EX60’s combination of range, performance, and Scandinavian design could attract both
