2027 Rivian R2: Will a smaller, less expensive electric SUV make Rivian the next Tesla?

Rivian is positioning its 2027 R2 electric SUV as a crucial step in expanding its market presence with a smaller, more affordable model aimed at the mainstream US market. The compact five-seat SUV offers up to 330 miles of EPA-rated range and will be priced between $45,000 and over $60,000, with the high-spec R2 Performance variant already available for delivery starting at just under $60,000. The company plans to ramp up production to 160,000 units annually at its Illinois plant, with a second facility in Georgia expected to come online by 2029, signalling Rivian’s ambitions to significantly increase its output beyond the current sales figures of its larger R1S SUV and R1T pickup. The R2 retains a strong visual identity consistent with Rivian’s brand, echoing the design language of its larger siblings while presenting a compact yet commanding presence. Its tall, square profile, vertical headlights, and slab-sided bodywork create a distinctive look that remains recognisable as a Rivian product. Inside, the cabin balances simplicity and quality, featuring innovative controls such as “haptic halo wheels” on the steering wheel that offer multiple tactile functions, while maintaining practical SUV features like a flat load floor, dual glove boxes, and a retractable power rear window for carrying longer items. Driving the R2 reveals a vehicle that feels robust and purposeful, with heavier steering and pedal effort compared to some rivals, reflecting its truck-like character. The standard driving mode delivers confident acceleration suitable for highway use, while a Sport mode sharpens throttle response. Although the launch model lacks the instant, high-powered acceleration that made Tesla famous, Rivian plans to introduce more powerful tri- or quad-motor variants in the future. Off-road capability is solid, comparable to mainstream SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, with expectations of an All-Terrain Package to enhance rugged performance further. Technically, the R2 employs a conventional 87.9-kWh battery pack using high-nickel NMCA cells supplied initially from South Korea, with production shifting to an Arizona plant next year. Unlike some competitors adopting 800-volt systems, Rivian’s architecture runs at around 450 volts, focusing its innovation on software, including zonal electronic control units and advanced driver assistance systems. The company is also preparing to integrate significant artificial intelligence features, indicating a strategic emphasis on technology and user experience alongside hardware improvements.
