17,000 New EV Chargers Coming To The UK

Hampshire is set to receive a significant boost to its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with the installation of over 17,000 new public EV chargers. This ambitious rollout surpasses previous large-scale projects, such as the 10,000 chargers announced earlier this year for Kent. The initiative aims to support the growing number of EV users, particularly those without access to off-street parking, by providing convenient and reliable charging options across the county. The majority of the new chargers will be residential units designed for overnight use, supplemented by approximately 800 rapid chargers to facilitate quicker top-ups. The first 500 chargers are scheduled to be operational before the end of the year, signalling a rapid pace of deployment. This project is being funded through a combination of government support and private sector investment, challenging the notion that EV infrastructure should rely solely on market forces. Local authorities and private companies are collaborating to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport, with Hampshire County Council and Believ, a UK-based EV charging operator, leading the charge. Believ emphasises that its network is powered entirely by renewable energy, reinforcing the environmental benefits of EVs over traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. This partnership represents the largest EV charging programme delivered through the UK government’s Low Emission Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) scheme to date. Beyond environmental advantages, the expansion of EV charging infrastructure also promises economic benefits, including job creation for local communities. The installation work avoids exposure to harmful fossil fuels, offering safer employment opportunities compared to traditional fuel stations. As the UK continues to push towards greener transport policies, projects like Hampshire’s demonstrate the feasibility and urgency of scaling up EV infrastructure nationwide.
