100 Free EV Chargers Installed In Saudi Arabia
Summary By: eMotoX
Lucid Motors has installed 100 free electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Saudi Arabia, marking a significant step in expanding public EV infrastructure in the country. This initiative complements an already growing network of free public chargers available at various locations such as supermarkets, malls, cinemas, and workplaces. The availability of free charging points is seen as a strong incentive to encourage drivers to transition from petrol and diesel vehicles to fully electric models.
Saudi Arabia’s EV charging landscape is supported by both private and public efforts, with many employers providing free workplace charging and retail centres offering complimentary access to customers. Despite this, most EV owners in the kingdom still prefer to charge their vehicles at home, benefiting from the convenience and potential cost savings, especially when combined with home solar power systems. The widespread installation of public chargers helps alleviate range anxiety and supports the broader adoption of electric vehicles.
The country’s affluent population, including over 300,000 millionaires, creates a promising market for luxury EV brands like Lucid, which produces high-end electric vehicles. Lucid’s strong ties to Saudi Arabia are further reinforced by substantial investments from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund. This financial backing underpins the company’s growth and the expansion of EV infrastructure in the region.
Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia plans to significantly increase its fast-charging network through the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Company (EVIQ), a joint venture between the PIF and the Saudi Electricity Company. EVIQ aims to deploy 5,000 fast chargers across 1,000 locations by 2030, signalling a major commitment to supporting the country’s transition to electric mobility. These developments position Saudi Arabia as a key player in the Middle East’s emerging EV market and highlight the role of public charging in accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels.
