$1 Billion Electric Truck Rebate Program Announced

California has launched a $1 billion rebate programme aimed at accelerating the adoption of fully electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks across the state. The initiative, known as the California Clean Fuel Reward, offers point-of-sale financial incentives to retailers purchasing or leasing new battery-electric commercial vehicles. Rebates vary by vehicle class, ranging from £5,800 for smaller Class 2b trucks to £93,000 for the largest Class 8 vehicles, with the scheme explicitly excluding hybrids and hydrogen-powered models. The programme arrives at a pivotal moment as electric heavy-duty trucks, such as Tesla’s Semi, gain traction in the US market, highlighted by recent large orders like WattEV’s acquisition of 370 units. Southern California Edison’s Senior Vice President Funmi Williamson described the Clean Fuel Reward as the largest utility-led incentive of its kind, designed to reduce upfront costs and promote long-term market transformation in fleet electrification. The scheme can also be combined with other incentives, providing further financial relief to commercial operators transitioning to zero-emission vehicles. The environmental and public health rationale behind the rebate programme is significant, given the substantial pollution caused by diesel and gas-powered commercial trucks. Toxic emissions from these vehicles contribute to respiratory illnesses such as asthma and are linked to thousands of premature deaths annually in California alone.
