Interview: Rick Elzinga – “The KTM feels more right for me”

Rick Elzinga’s rookie MXGP season has been marked by significant challenges, including repeated injuries and difficulties in adapting to his initial team’s machinery. After a tough winter plagued by injury setbacks, Elzinga struggled to find a connection with his Beta bike, leading to a mutual decision to part ways with the team. This turn of events opened the door for a late-season switch to Van Venrooy KTM, where he had very limited time to prepare before competing at the German Grand Prix. Despite the short adjustment period, Elzinga managed to secure his first Grand Prix points of the year, signalling a positive shift in his campaign. Elzinga’s first impressions of the KTM 450 SX-F were encouraging, with the bike feeling more natural and better suited to his riding style compared to his previous Yamaha and Beta machines. He noted the KTM’s distinctive torque delivery, which contrasts with the raw power of his former Yamaha, requiring some adaptation but ultimately providing a good platform. Although he made only minor personal adjustments to the bike’s setup during the German GP weekend, such as changing the seat and handlebars, the overall package was solid and required little modification. This quick acclimatisation helped boost his confidence and performance on race day. The atmosphere within the Van Venrooy KTM team also played a crucial role in Elzinga’s renewed optimism. He praised the straightforward and supportive team environment, which matched his own mentality and made it easier to settle in despite the limited preparation time. The presence of experienced teammates and a no-nonsense approach to feedback helped foster a positive dynamic, allowing Elzinga to focus on improving his riding. This supportive environment contrasted with the frustrations he faced earlier in the season and contributed to a more enjoyable racing experience. In reflecting on his injury struggles, Elzinga expressed frustration at the recurring setbacks during winter periods, which have hindered his ability to develop and progress consistently. He believes that without these interruptions, his natural talent and work ethic would have allowed him to reach a higher level by now. Nevertheless, he remains determined to adapt and make the most of his opportunities, recognising the steep challenge of competing in the MXGP class, which features multiple world champions and a higher level of competition than his previous categories. Looking ahead, Elzinga is optimistic about his future with Van Venrooy KTM and confident that his best performances are still to come. Although he acknowledged the need to adjust further as he aims to move closer to the front of the MXGP field, the recent switch and improved team environment have given him renewed motivation. His contract details for the remainder of the season, including flyaway rounds, were still being finalised at the time of the interview, but Elzinga’s focus remains firmly on building momentum and realising his potential in the premier class.
