Interview: Kevin Horgmo – “I really like that MXGP has become the real centre of attention”
Summary By: eMotoX
Kevin Horgmo has faced a challenging start to his 2024 MXGP season after a promising rookie year with the Honda SR Motoblouz team. The Norwegian rider has been hampered by illness, physical setbacks, and the after-effects of a shoulder injury sustained last season. Despite these obstacles, Horgmo remains positive about his progress and is determined to improve his standing in one of the most competitive MXGP fields in recent memory. He currently sits 15th in the World Championship after five rounds and is also competing strongly in the French Elite MX1 Championship.
Horgmo revealed that a bout of flu early in the season severely disrupted his training and race preparation, compounded by arm pump issues and a lack of sand riding due to his previous injury. He acknowledged that the high intensity and depth of talent in MXGP this year make it difficult to recover positions if a rider does not get good starts. The Norwegian also addressed a team statement suggesting he chose not to take medication during his illness, clarifying that he simply followed medical advice to rest and that racing every weekend hindered his full recovery.
Discussing the competitiveness of the MXGP class, Horgmo expressed enthusiasm about the influx of rookies and former world champions, noting that MXGP has become the premier category in motocross. He emphasised the importance of strong starts and race intensity in achieving good results and remains committed to proving himself among the sport’s elite. Within his team, Horgmo highlighted the differences in riding styles between himself and teammate Thibaut, which initially led to some challenges in bike setup but are now better understood as they refine their approaches.
Reflecting on his decision to extend his contract with Honda SR early last year, Horgmo affirmed that remaining with the team was the right choice despite missing out on a factory ride. He values the stability and cohesive environment within the team and hinted that a longer contract might have provided even greater security. Looking ahead, Horgmo is focused on regaining his physical peak and continuing to develop his performance as the season progresses.
