Interview: Antonio Cairoli – “The will is there to race AMA Pro MX rounds”

Antonio Cairoli, a nine-time motocross world champion and one of the sport’s most revered figures, remains deeply involved in the motocross scene despite stepping back from full-time competition. Currently playing a pivotal role in Ducati’s motocross project, Cairoli balances development work, mentoring riders, and contemplating a potential return to racing. During a recent visit to the United States, he engaged closely with the Factory Connection team, testing new bike setups and exchanging valuable technical insights to enhance Ducati’s performance on both sides of the Atlantic. Cairoli expressed enthusiasm about the progress made by the American team, highlighting their professionalism and the benefits of collaboration. He acknowledged the improvements in bike performance this year, which could boost his chances should he decide to compete in AMA Pro Motocross rounds. While he confirmed that the desire to race remains strong, a final decision on participating in American nationals is still pending. Reflecting on his age, Cairoli, now 41, remains impressed by his own pace but is cautious about the physical demands of certain tracks, particularly the hard-packed and challenging circuits common in the U.S. Regarding his involvement in the Motocross des Nations, Cairoli emphasised that team selection is based on current form and the best available riders rather than age or reputation. He recalled his unexpected participation last year, which was driven purely by merit and team needs, despite some external speculation. Although an injury hampered his performance, he demonstrated strong competitiveness, underscoring the importance of experience in such a prestigious event. Cairoli also discussed the recent changes within Ducati’s GP team management, noting the transition from Italian leadership under Maddii to Dutch management with Louis Vosters. He pointed out that while organisational styles differ, the factory maintains open communication and collaboration with the team leadership to optimise results. On technical matters, he explained that while the American squad runs a Factory Connection setup, GP riders currently use Showa suspension, though future decisions on equipment may evolve depending on what best suits the riders and racing conditions. Overall, Cairoli’s ongoing involvement signals Ducati’s commitment to growth and competitiveness in motocross at the highest levels.
