ACU High Performance Academy coaches go trackside at British and European motocross events

Summary By: eMotoX
The Auto-Cycle Union’s High Performance Academy (HPA) motocross programme has entered a new stage, with coaches now providing direct support to riders during races across the UK and Europe. After an initial selection and assessment phase, the focus has shifted to hands-on guidance at championship rounds, where riders Drew Stock, Lucas Moncrieff, and Hayden Statt are receiving expert coaching in real competitive settings. ACU Motocross Performance Director Mark Chamberlain and Head Coach Stephen Sword have already attended several European Motocross (EMX) events in Spain, Switzerland, and Italy, as well as the opening rounds of the MXGB series, with additional input from five-time British champion Tommy Searle. The programme aims to equip riders with the skills and mindset necessary to compete consistently at an international level, emphasising more than just speed. Coaches are concentrating on race preparation, decision-making, and maintaining composure under pressure, offering practical advice during track walks and analysing qualifying strategies. Chamberlain highlighted the importance of understanding the finer details of top-level racing, such as managing energy and concentration, which can significantly impact performance. A key focus has been helping riders develop a structured approach to qualifying sessions, encouraging them to build quality laps rather than simply chasing times. The coaching team has also fostered strong relationships with the riders, with Sword praising their attitude and willingness to learn. He noted that the group has been receptive to feedback and applied new information effectively, demonstrating the professionalism expected of athletes aiming to progress through the ranks. From the riders’ perspective, Drew Stock expressed appreciation for the coaches’ experience and guidance, recognising the benefits of being part of a nationally recognised development programme. He also acknowledged the value of the ACU’s efforts to align British rider development with successful FIM-approved programmes internationally. Looking ahead, the HPA will continue to support riders both on and off the track, with further training sessions planned to build on current progress. A significant upcoming target is Britain’s MXGP event at Foxhills in July, where the riders hope to showcase their improvements in front of a home crowd. The ongoing involvement of the coaching team at race events and in individual training reflects a comprehensive approach to nurturing emerging talent within British motocross.
