New 2027 RockShox ZEB Ultimate on Test – The New Benchmark?
Summary By: eMotoX
RockShox has unveiled a completely redesigned version of its ZEB Ultimate fork for 2027, marking a significant departure from previous models rather than a mere update. Developed over four years, the new ZEB aims to deliver a more linear spring curve, reduced friction, and enhanced adjustability, targeting enduro riders while also appealing to trail bike users. The fork features 150 to 180 mm of travel with 38 mm stanchions and incorporates new technologies such as the LinearXL air spring and the AirAnnex extender, which increases air volume in the lower leg to improve spring progression and rebound control.
A key innovation in the new ZEB is the AirAnnex system, positioned near the brake mount, which balances the air volume between the fork’s air spring and damper sides, a design choice that addresses the differing internal volumes caused by the fork’s architecture. The LinearXL air spring uses a twin-tube design and a hollow air shaft to create a more predictable and consistent ride feel by smoothing out the force build-up throughout the travel. Additionally, RockShox has introduced the Adjustable Bottom Out (ABO) system, a mechanical rubber bumper that allows fine-tuning of the fork’s end-of-travel behaviour over eight clicks, replacing the previous hydraulic system.
While the damper unit, now called Charger 3.2, remains largely unchanged, it has been retuned to complement the fork’s new linear air spring characteristics, delivering increased damping. The damper retains familiar adjustment options, including five clicks of high-speed compression and 15 clicks of low-speed compression, all easily readable thanks to a redesigned dial layout. This user-friendly interface allows riders to quickly and precisely set their preferred damping levels, enhancing the overall tuning experience.
Despite its many advancements, the new ZEB Ultimate has some drawbacks, including a heavier weight compared to its predecessor and limited availability, as it is only offered in Ultimate or Select versions. Notably, there is no 190 mm travel option, which may disappoint some riders seeking more extreme travel lengths. Nevertheless, the fork’s comprehensive redesign and focus on performance optimisation suggest it could set a new benchmark in the enduro suspension category.
The introduction of the 2027 ZEB Ultimate signals RockShox’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of suspension technology, blending innovative engineering with practical rider-focused features. Its performance on challenging trails during testing has demonstrated the benefits of the new design philosophy, particularly in terms of traction and ride consistency. As RockShox continues to refine its product range, the ZEB Ultimate is poised to become a key player in the competitive landscape of high-performance enduro forks.
