First Ride Review: New Bosch eBike Software Update 2.0

Summary By: eMotoX
Bosch has released its latest eBike software update, Performance Update 2.0, focusing on enhancing rider experience without increasing peak power output. Unlike some competitors who continue to push for higher wattage, Bosch maintains its 750W peak power limit, adhering to its philosophy of promoting self-regulation within the eMTB industry. Instead, the update boosts maximum torque from 100Nm to 120Nm and support ratios from 400% to 600%, offering more responsive assistance tailored to specific riding conditions. Central to the update are improvements to the fifth-generation Performance Line CX and CX-R motors, which now feature an adjustable Extended Boost setting. This allows riders to fine-tune the overrun duration, providing smoother or more dynamic power delivery during technical climbs and tricky terrain. Additionally, the new Drivetrain Tensioner reduces slack in the drivetrain, improving power transfer and protecting the freehub from wear, which should enhance control and reduce maintenance over time. Bosch also introduces a new 12A fast charger capable of delivering approximately 500W charging power, significantly reducing battery recharge times. This charger, expected to be available by late 2026, promises to fill a PowerTube 800 battery to 50% in about an hour, a notable improvement for riders who require quick turnaround times during extended rides. While the charger’s compact design benefits from GaN technology, it is heavier than the previous 4A model, and some advanced charging features remain absent. The update also includes the Trick Check feature, which detects and records tricks such as jumps and manuals, providing live data and post-ride analysis via the eBike Flow app. Although this adds a playful and motivational element for some riders, its practical value for everyday trail riding is less clear. The Performance Update 2.0 will be available as a free over-the-air update from May 2026, with manufacturers needing to approve the higher torque settings before riders can activate them. Overall, Bosch’s Performance Update 2.0 represents a measured response to the ongoing eMTB power race, prioritising refined control, efficiency, and rider engagement over raw power increases. The combination of software enhancements and hardware upgrades like the fast charger aims to improve the riding experience while supporting durability and sustainability within the eBike sector.
