Why Remco Evenepoel's bike is at the Critérium du Dauphiné, but he isn't

Remco Evenepoel’s presence at the Critérium du Dauphiné has sparked curiosity after his name was spotted on a new Specialized Tarmac SL9 bike at the race, despite the Belgian rider not taking part. Initially, Evenepoel had removed the Dauphiné from his racing schedule, choosing instead to focus on training ahead of the Tour de France. His absence from the start line on Sunday confirmed that plan, but the appearance of his bike at the event raised questions about a possible last-minute change. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe quickly dispelled rumours of Evenepoel’s participation, explaining that his bike was transported to France purely for logistical convenience. Sports Director Klaas Lodewyck clarified that the team planned to use the bike for reconnaissance rides after the race, making it easier to conduct course inspections without the need for additional equipment. This approach echoes the team’s previous strategy of managing Evenepoel’s race calendar carefully, following his surprise appearance at the Tour of Flanders earlier in the season, which was confirmed only days before the event. Lodewyck emphasised that Evenepoel’s preparation remains on track after a significant training block in Spain. The rider is prioritising building fitness and intensity rather than rushing into competition prematurely. This measured approach aims to avoid the pitfalls of past seasons, where Evenepoel’s form was sometimes compromised by early racing. The team is confident that this strategy will better position him for the Tour de France, with training now the main focus. In Evenepoel’s absence, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe fielded a squad at the Dauphiné without their leading rider or other key members such as Florian Lipowitz and Primož Roglič. Instead, the team relied on a mix of riders including Maxim Van Gils and Dani Martinez to compete in the race. The presence of Evenepoel’s bike without the rider underscores the team’s meticulous planning and commitment to optimising his preparation for the season’s most important objectives.
