'We've always kept the belief' – spirited Egan Bernal looking ready to fight for high placing at the Giro d'Italia

Egan Bernal has demonstrated promising form ahead of the Giro d’Italia, showing resilience and determination despite recent setbacks. The Colombian, who won the Giro in 2021, impressed during the Tour of the Alps, particularly on the challenging Queen stage to Trento, where he repeatedly responded to attacks from the race leader Giulio Pellizzari. Bernal’s performance has sparked optimism within his team, Ineos Grenadiers, as he appears ready to contend for a high placing in the upcoming Grand Tour. Ineos Grenadiers’ sports director Leonard Basso emphasised that the Tour of the Alps serves as a crucial part of the team’s preparation for the Giro. Despite Bernal’s recent knee injury, which forced him to take a three-week training break and miss key races, the team has maintained unwavering faith in his capabilities. Basso highlighted the importance of Bernal working alongside co-leader Thymen Arensman, noting that both riders are currently positioned just seconds behind the race leader, signalling strong form and cohesion within the squad. Basso also reflected on the evolving nature of professional cycling, noting that the sport has become more aggressive with decisive moves occurring further from the finish line. He acknowledged that Bernal and the team are adapting to these changes, including new race dynamics such as bonus seconds near the finish, which have altered race strategies. While Basso refrained from comparing Bernal’s current physical metrics to those before his crash, he stressed the significance of mental strength, praising Bernal’s mindset as a key factor in pushing limits and maintaining consistency. Looking ahead to the Giro d’Italia, Bernal faces a competitive field featuring notable contenders such as Jonas Vingegaard, João Almeida, Richard Carapaz, and Jai Hindley. Although the competition is fierce, Bernal’s recent performances and mental resilience suggest he remains a serious contender for the podium. Ineos Grenadiers’ approach of building form through targeted races and focusing on process over immediate results could well position Bernal for a strong showing in one of cycling’s most prestigious events.
