'We ride well, we ride smart' - Jhonathan Narváez takes a second stage win after a crazy stage 8 at the Giro d'Italia
Summary By: eMotoX
Jhonathan Narváez claimed a dramatic second stage victory at the 109th Giro d’Italia, triumphing on the challenging eighth stage that finished in Fermo. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider launched a decisive attack in the final 10 kilometres, breaking away from Andreas Leknessund of Uno-X Mobility on the steep closing gradients. Narváez crossed the line 32 seconds ahead of the Norwegian, despite Leknessund’s determined efforts to rejoin him on a brief descent. Mikkel Bjerg, Narváez’s team mate who played a crucial role in setting up the win, faded to a lower placing, while Martin Tjøtta, also from Uno-X Mobility, secured third.
The stage was marked by intense tactical battles and a relentless headwind, which initially hampered breakaway attempts. Early moves by Alberto Bettiol and Filippo Ganna were gradually reeled in, with the decisive breakaway finally forming around halfway through the 156km route from Chieti to Fermo. This leading group, including Narváez, Bjerg and Leknessund, capitalised on splits in the peloton caused by aggressive racing and strong winds, building a lead that proved insurmountable. The closing section featured a series of punishing short climbs, culminating in steep gradients that ultimately decided the stage winner.
Narváez praised his team’s collective effort, singling out Bjerg’s work as instrumental in the victory. He highlighted the physical and mental challenges posed by the headwind and the demanding terrain but emphasised the team’s resilience and tactical intelligence. “We never gave up, we ride well, we ride smart,” Narváez reflected, underscoring the careful balance of strength and strategy that secured the win. Despite a late attack from overall leader Afonso Eulálio, the general classification remained largely unchanged, with Eulálio retaining the pink jersey.
The outcome of stage 8 has reinforced UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s strong presence in this year’s Giro, marking their third stage win despite being reduced to just five riders following a mass crash earlier in the race. Christian Scaroni’s move into fourth place in the overall standings was the only significant shake-up in the general classification, signalling potential shifts in the coming stages. As the race progresses, the combination of tactical acumen and physical endurance demonstrated by Narváez and his team will be crucial in the ongoing battle for stage honours and overall victory.
