Unbound Gravel reveals 2026 route with south and north features combined to include 'potentially muddy' sections

Summary By: eMotoX
The 2026 route for the Life Time Unbound Gravel 200 has been unveiled, combining elements from both the southern and northern loops traditionally used in the event. Starting in Emporia, Kansas, the course extends 207 miles (333km) with over 9,000 feet (2,743m) of climbing, forming a clockwise hybrid route that incorporates iconic sections from past editions alongside new challenges. This marks a departure from recent years where the race primarily headed north from the start, instead beginning with a southern route reminiscent of the demanding 2023 “peanut butter mud” edition before looping back northwards. Key features of the new course include a mixture of gravel roads, creek crossings, and potentially muddy stretches, particularly on sections such as Yy Road and DD Avenue. Riders will face notable climbs like the “Towers climb” early on, followed by the infamous Texaco Hill, which offers a sustained gradient before a technical descent. The route also introduces fresh terrain, including the rugged and varied W Road west of Emporia, which organisers describe as containing rocky, grassy, and creek-crossing elements that will test riders’ skills and endurance. The race includes three checkpoints, with Madison at mile 43.5, Matfield Green at mile 98.9, and Council Grove at mile 163, providing key feed zones and rest points for competitors. The final stages of the course feature a climb up Highland Hill near Emporia State University before a fast finish on Commercial Street, where last year’s winners Karolina Migoń and Cameron Jones crossed the line. Alongside the 200-mile race, the Unbound 100 and XL distances will follow variations of the route, ensuring a broad range of challenges for participants across the event weekend. Michelle Duffy, director of the Life Time Grand Prix, emphasised the significance of the hybrid route, highlighting how it brings together memorable terrain from two decades of Unbound Gravel history into a unique and demanding course. With live coverage available on the Life Time Grand Prix YouTube channel, the 20th anniversary edition promises to attract global attention, offering fans the chance to follow the race in real time. The combination of familiar landmarks and new obstacles is set to make the 2026 event a landmark edition in the growing gravel racing calendar.
