Trek Introduces New RSL Lace Road Cycling and Mountain Bike Shoes
Summary By: eMotoX
Trek has expanded its high-performance cycling shoe range with the introduction of the RSL Lace Road and Mountain Bike shoes, offering riders a traditional lace-up closure as an alternative to the existing BOA dial system. These new models retain key features such as the 100% OCLV carbon sole, METNET uppers, and the Trek Pro Last fit, but come at a lower price point and reduced weight. The lace closure is designed to provide a more aerodynamic profile, improve comfort through customizable fit, and deliver measurable performance gains.
Wind tunnel testing conducted by Trek indicates that the RSL Lace Road shoes reduce drag, saving an average of 1.84 watts at 45kph compared to the BOA-equipped version. To complement the laces, the shoes include Aero Lace Covers that streamline airflow over the foot. Weight savings are also significant, with the lace-up road shoes weighing 211 grams per shoe in size 42, some 38 grams lighter than their BOA counterparts, while the mountain bike versions are similarly lighter by approximately 39 grams.
Comfort and power transfer remain priorities in the design of the RSL Lace shoes. The lace system allows riders to fine-tune tension across different parts of the foot, working in conjunction with METNET relief zones and a wider Pro Last fit to alleviate pressure points. Trek has also introduced a Watt Lock internal structure to enhance foot stability and maximise pedalling efficiency throughout the pedal stroke, particularly benefiting power transfer on the upstroke.
The RSL Lace Road and MTB shoes share many features but differ primarily in sole design and cleat compatibility. The road shoe features a 3-bolt cleat interface with minimal rubber pads for weight savings and ventilation, while the mountain bike shoe includes a lugged rubber tread and 2-bolt cleat compatibility for off-road traction and walkability. Both models are unisex, available in a range of European sizes, and currently offered in white only.
Priced at $375, the RSL Lace models present a more affordable option compared to the $495 BOA versions, appealing to riders seeking aerodynamic efficiency, lightweight construction, and a traditional lacing system. The shoes are now available through Trek’s website, select retailers, and Trek stores, signalling Trek’s commitment to offering versatile, race-ready footwear for both road and mountain biking disciplines.
