Tour of the Gila: Lauren Stephens and Walter Vargas earn first leader's jerseys with opening time trial victories

Lauren Stephens and Walter Vargas claimed the leader’s jerseys at the Tour of the Gila after winning the opening individual time trial stages. Stephens, a two-time winner, successfully defended her elite women’s overall title by narrowly defeating Emily Ehrlich by six seconds on the 26km course. Meanwhile, Walter Vargas of Team Medellín-EPM dominated the elite men’s time trial, finishing 37 seconds ahead of his closest competitor over the same challenging route featuring significant elevation gain. Vargas, a seven-time Pan-American ITT champion, set a commanding pace in the men’s event, completing the 16.15-mile course in 32 minutes and 30 seconds. Beckam Drake of Elevate Racing and last year’s runner-up Eric Brunner rounded out the men’s podium. Defending champion Kieran Haug finished 14th, while the 2024 winner Tyler Stites placed fifth, reflecting a competitive field with strong performances from several contenders. Stephens’ victory was particularly notable as it marked the first race for her new team, Aegis x Leaders of Enchantment, which she co-founded with Lee Whaley and her husband Mat Stephens. She expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, highlighting their strong start with three riders in the top ten and the team’s lead in the general classification. Kylee Hanel also secured the white young rider’s jersey, signalling depth in the women’s squad. The opening stage set a promising tone for the rest of the week’s racing, with Stephens and Vargas establishing themselves as early favourites. Their performances underscore the high level of competition at the Tour of the Gila and hint at an exciting battle ahead in both the men’s and women’s events.
