Tim Bright, a 57-year-old cyclist living with chronic myeloid leukaemia, is undertaking an extraordinary challenge to cycle around the nearly 5,000-mile coastline of mainland Britain on a classic Raleigh Chopper bicycle. Diagnosed in 2016 with an incurable but manageable form of leukaemia, Bright has used his condition as motivation to raise funds for cancer charities and demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity. His journey, dubbed the ‘Giving Cancer the Chop…per’ challenge, began in April from Cromer, Norfolk, and involves following a route previously cycled by other riders, though none on a bike as unconventional as his. The Raleigh Chopper, originally a child’s bike known for its iconic 1970s design, presents significant physical challenges for such a long-distance ride. Bright’s chosen model is a Mark III reissue, which, despite being sturdier than the original, is still far from ideal for adult touring. The bike has suffered multiple mechanical failures, including a snapped frame and broken spokes, yet Bright remains undeterred, even receiving free repairs from a welder who strengthened the frame. The physical toll is compounded by the side effects of his daily medication, which include fatigue and muscle soreness, making each mile a test of endurance. Bright’s motivation goes beyond personal achievement; he aims to inspire others living with cancer and raise money for Cancer Research UK, with all funds from the challenge donated directly to the charity. Accompanied by his wife Sue, who acts as his support driver, the couple have funded the expedition themselves. Public support has been overwhelmingly positive, with locals offering accommodation and assistance along the route. Bright welcomes anyone willing to join him for parts of the journey, highlighting the communal spirit surrounding his endeavour. Despite the hardships, Bright’s outlook remains optimistic and determined.
