'There aren't many hours outside of all the rehab to spend a lot of time enjoying life' – Jay Vine won't be targeting GC at Giro d'Italia after stop-start 2026 season
Summary By: eMotoX
Jay Vine has confirmed that he will not be targeting the general classification (GC) at this year’s Giro d’Italia, despite the absence of UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s original leader, João Almeida. The Australian rider, known for his climbing prowess and time trial skills, has yet to translate his potential into a strong GC result in Grand Tours, with his best finish so far being outside the top 30. With Almeida out, Adam Yates is expected to lead the team, while Vine will focus on other objectives during the three-week race starting in Bulgaria.
Vine’s 2026 season has been disrupted by injury and misfortune, including a fractured scaphoid sustained in a crash caused by a kangaroo during the Tour Down Under, followed by another crash at the Volta a Catalunya. These setbacks have limited his racing to just 11 days so far this year, and much of his time has been devoted to rehabilitation and training. Despite these challenges, Vine remains mentally fresh and motivated as he prepares for the Giro, acknowledging the sacrifices required to return to peak condition.
Rather than aiming for a high GC placing, Vine’s primary focus will be on the stage 10 individual time trial, a 42-kilometre flat course from Viareggio to Massa. Recognised as one of the world’s top time trial specialists, Vine is eager to challenge the likes of Filippo Ganna and potentially secure his first Grand Tour time trial victory. He has been working intensively on his position and technique, including training with the Australian team, and views this stage as his best opportunity for success in the race.
Beyond racing ambitions, Vine has expressed a desire to enjoy the personal aspects of the Giro, particularly the prospect of reaching Rome and reuniting with his family. His approach reflects a pragmatic acceptance of the difficulties faced this season, focusing on achievable goals and the broader experience of the race. With UAE Team Emirates-XRG adapting to the absence of Almeida, Vine’s role will be more supportive, but his time trial performance could still be a highlight of the Corsa Rosa.
