The New Kona Unity Might be the Ultimate Bikepacking Vessel

Kona Bikes has unveiled the Unity, a purpose-built bikepacking rig designed to meet the demands of riders carrying heavier loads without sacrificing ride quality. The Unity combines the rugged capabilities of a mountain bike with the versatility of a gravel bike, featuring a mixed wheel setup with a 29-inch front and 27.5-inch rear wheel. This configuration lowers the centre of gravity and enhances handling, particularly when the bike is fully loaded for extended adventures. A standout feature of the Unity is its custom frame-mounted front rack, which bolts directly to the frame to avoid the common handling issues associated with front-loaded cargo. The frame itself offers generous carrying capacity, including a large front triangle optimised for frame bags and numerous mounting points for bottles, tools, and accessories. Additionally, the bike remains compatible with popular aftermarket racks, allowing riders to tailor their setup to the specific needs of their journey. In terms of components, the Unity emphasises durability and performance under load. It is equipped with a robust Shimano XT Linkglide 11-speed drivetrain, featuring a low 28-tooth steel chainring to aid climbing and managing heavier weights. Stopping power comes from Tektro’s four-piston hydraulic brakes paired with oversized 203mm rotors, ensuring reliable braking even on steep descents. The bike also supports dropper posts with travel ranging from 170 to 200mm, maintaining technical descending ability despite the added cargo. Priced at $2,699, the Unity features a Kona Cromoly butted frame available in four sizes and is built with high-quality components such as RaceFace cranks, WTB Ranger tyres, and DT 370 hubs with upgraded engagement. The bike’s geometry and fork offset have been specifically tuned to maintain predictable steering when loaded, making it well-suited for long-distance bikepacking trips.
