Romain Bardet out of mud-soaked Unbound just 100 miles in
Summary By: eMotoX
Romain Bardet’s debut at the 2026 Unbound Gravel race was cut short after just 100 miles, as the former Tour de France stage winner abandoned the event amid challenging conditions. Bardet, who had recently retired from WorldTour racing and shifted his focus to gravel events, was seen returning to Matfield Green without his helmet, signalling his withdrawal. Despite the early exit, witnesses confirmed that Bardet appeared unharmed, having battled through the increasingly difficult terrain before deciding to step off the course.
The race was marked by severe weather, with heavy rain and thunderstorms turning the Flint Hills’ gravel roads into thick mud, making the course exceptionally demanding. Riders faced deep clay, standing water, and energy-sapping conditions that slowed progress and tested endurance. These conditions made the 2026 edition one of the muddiest in recent memory, rivaling the notorious 2023 race, and significantly impacted the racing dynamics throughout the day.
Bardet had arrived in the United States after a month-long family road trip, viewing his participation as an opportunity to experience the iconic event rather than compete for a top result. Prior to the race, he emphasised that his approach was recreational, reflecting his transition into gravel racing in his first full season outside the WorldTour. His presence nonetheless added a high-profile element to the event, drawing attention from fans and media alike.
As Bardet exited the race, the competition continued with around 100 miles still to cover. The men’s race was led by Specialized Off-Road teammates Keegan Swenson and Mads Würtz Schmidt, who were navigating the brutal conditions to maintain their advantage. The ongoing contest underscored the resilience required to tackle such a punishing course, highlighting the unpredictable nature of gravel racing in adverse weather.
