Otso Cycles Delivers an Affordable, Fun, Steel Trail Bike, and it’s a Hoot!

Otso Cycles has expanded its trail bike lineup with the introduction of the Hoot Steel, a more affordable steel-framed version of the popular Hoot Ti hardtail. Building on the success of the original titanium model, the Hoot Steel offers 140mm of front suspension travel and features a custom butted 4130 chromoly steel frame designed to balance descending confidence with playful trail handling. Its geometry includes a slack 65-degree head tube angle and short 425mm chainstays, providing responsive control on technical terrain while maintaining stability on steep descents. The Hoot Steel is engineered with versatility in mind, supporting 29-inch tyres up to 2.6 inches wide and compatible with 150mm suspension forks without significant changes to its geometry. A standout design feature is its low standover height, which allows for longer dropper post insertion and enhances rider comfort and control. The frame also incorporates an externally mounted bottle cage on the seat tube, a practical solution that avoids interference with dropper post travel and doubles as a strap mount for accessories. Available in a single “Sparkly Bronze” colourway with custom anodised component options, the Hoot Steel is offered in four sizes, each using tubing tailored to maintain consistent ride quality across the range. The bike is sold as a frame-only option for $1,200, with complete builds featuring Shimano SLX or SRAM GX AXS groupsets priced at $3,300 and $3,950 respectively. Components include RockShox Pike forks, DT Swiss wheels, and Wolf Tooth headsets, ensuring a well-rounded specification for trail riders seeking durability and performance.
