NSN Devo rider suspended for punching another rider during Ster van Zwolle

Summary By: eMotoX
New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts, riding for the NSN Devo Team, has been suspended by the UCI following an incident during the Ster van Zwolle race in the Netherlands. The 24-year-old was caught on camera punching fellow competitor Marijn Maas of BEAT CC p/b Saxo with a closed fist during the race, which took place on 7 March 2026. As a result, Watts was immediately disqualified by the race jury and subsequently withdrawn from his next scheduled race, the Dorpenomloop Rucphen, by his team. The UCI’s disciplinary panel imposed a 25-day suspension on Watts, effective from 9 April to 2 May 2026, with credit given for a one-day suspension already served. In addition to the suspension, he was fined CHF 200 and had 25 UCI points deducted. Watts accepted responsibility for breaching article 12.4.009 of the UCI Regulations and agreed to the sanctions without contesting them, demonstrating acknowledgement of the seriousness of his conduct. The governing body reiterated the importance of upholding the values of sportsmanship, fairness, and respect within the cycling community, referencing the Riders’ Charter of Rights and Responsibilities. This incident serves as a reminder that cyclists, as licence holders and representatives of the sport, must adhere to behavioural standards that protect the integrity of competition. The UCI’s firm response underscores its commitment to maintaining discipline and respect in professional cycling. Watts’ suspension and the circumstances surrounding the altercation have sparked discussion within the cycling community, highlighting ongoing challenges related to rider conduct during high-pressure events. The case may prompt teams and race organisers to review their protocols for managing conflicts on the road. Looking ahead, the UCI is likely to continue enforcing strict penalties for unsportsmanlike behaviour to deter similar incidents and preserve the sport’s reputation.
